HABs Reporting

Report a Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB)

If you believe you have seen a suspicious harmful algal bloom, send the location of the bloom, the date and time observed, and two pictures to habshotline@gmail.com.

When sending the location, we would prefer to have GPS coordinates if possible.

To retrieve coordinates on iPhone: Launch the maps app and drop a marker on the desired location. Then, swipe up on the information panel, and you should see the latitude and longitude.

To retrieve coordinates on Android: Launch the Google Maps app. Touch and hold the area of the map that you would like to find the coordinates of. A red pin should appear, and the coordinates will be in the search box at the top of your screen.

If you are unable to find the coordinates of the HAB, a nearby address or landmark will work.

To see where HABs have been reported…

Reported HABs on Cayuga Lake can be found on the Community Science Institute’s website here. When viewing the interactive map, we recommend using full screen mode. To do so, click on the broken box in the upper right hand corner of the map. Once viewing in full screen, more information on reported HABs, including pictures and date observed, can be found by clicking on the raindrop-shaped icons.

Reported freshwater HABs across New York State can be found on the DEC’s NYHABs interactive map here. HABs that were reported within the last two weeks will appear as yellow dots, while all older reports will appear as gray dots.
