John A. Mawdsley and his wife live in the headwaters of Six-Mile Creek
watershed. John lived in Ithaca for five years in the 1970’s and
returned to live near Dryden in 2000. John has a degree in Civil Engineering,
obtained in England, and a Ph.D. in Hydrology from Cornell University.
John works part time for an engineering consulting company located in
England, where he worked full time for several years before moving to
the USA. He specializes in water related projects including flood risk
assessments, water resource planning and operation.
John worked for 7 years for the Environment Agency in England and Wales
where he was responsible for water resource planning and management
issues. Much of this work required finding management solutions that
balanced conflicting interests of groups within the watersheds. These
included the protection of river and wetland environments, the water
needs of water companies and others, the health of the fisheries, and
recreation of all forms. In addition, John worked with standing committees
that offered advise to the Agency concerning new policies and the implementation
of existing policies.
He and his wife own 32 acres of woods and enjoy walking and working
in them. They have five adult children and three grandchildren dispersed
in the USA, England, Brazil and Taiwan. John’s philosophy in relation
to the environment is to create a reasonable balance between the natural
environment and the needs of man; “reasonable” in terms
of sustainable impacts on the natural environment. He notes, “In
many cases we have gone beyond the balance point and need to retreat
to restore the balance.”
