Ed Harwood is the Managing Member of GreatVeggies® LLC. His
company has developed a commercial aeroponic system to grow leafy
greens locally without soil, pests, pesticides, sun, or the need
to wash the greens. The company intends to populate vacant buildings
with these automated growing systems while providing delicious salads
and people friendly jobs.
As a lifelong learner, Ed is always involved in interesting projects.
In 2007, he assisted the Virgin Islands Farmers' Cooperative in
mapping the food system on St. Croix. Most recently, he has been
researching the impact of specific light spectra and intensities
on leafy green yield and quality.
Dr. Harwood has undergraduate degrees in microbiology and animal
science. He obtained an M.S. in Animal Science leading to more than
twenty years in the dairy equipment industry filling a multitude
of roles from systems engineer to president. In 1990, he received
his Ph.D. in Dairy Science with a minor in Artificial Intelligence
from the University of Wisconsin.
Before he started GreatVeggies® LLC in 2003 Ed was Associated
Director for Agriculture at Cornell Cooperative Extension. For nearly
fifteen years, Ed and his family have been sailing on and swimming
in Cayuga Lake, "Water is a
most precious resource for recreation, sustenance, beauty, and the
economy - we must not waste it."
