Baker retired from Cornell University in January 2009, after working
with Sea Grant for 36 years and serving as a Sea Grant Extension
Program Leader for 34 years. He split his career between the Sea
Grant Programs in Minnesota and New York. During this timeframe
he spent about a year at the National Sea Grant Office in Silver
Spring Md. under an IPA arrangement. His major Sea Grant programmatic
responsibilities, during his career, were in the issue areas of
Commercial Fisheries, Ports and Harbors, Aquaculture and Coastal
Climate Change. While he was the Program Leader and Associate Director
for the NY Sea Grant Program he managed a Sea Grant Extension staff
of 30 individuals including 19 professionals. Sea Grant Extension
staff were located in the Marine and Great Lakes region of NY (from
Riverhead Long Island to Buffalo). He was the Principal Investigator
for numerous grants and contracts, which during this time period
averaged more than 3 million dollars per year. Since his retirement
he has continued to do work for Sea Grant, become President of the
Trustees for the local Library and works with the Cayuga Lake Watershed
Network.
