Wonderful Watershed

Bryan DiDona, Grade 6-8, Seneca Falls Middle School

Every day people use a lot of water. Some times even gallons. From having fun to drinking, its hard to find a day when we don’t use water. In our area most water comes from one place. That place is Cayuga Lake and life would be totally different without it.

In the summer time when the weather is hot, a lot of people go down to the lake. You can boat, water ski, or just plain swim. Something is always going on down at the lake. When summer leaves and winter storms in some people might say “you can’t use the lake any more”. That's totally untrue. Most of the time during winter months the lake is frozen solid. That makes room for ice fishing, skating, and the occasional snowmobiling.
The Lake isn’t all fun and games though. Its got to work too. Most of the time in our own houses. Whether its for showers, washing dishes or doing laundry. Water is used for all these things and more. Without the water for drinking we would all dehydrate. Where does all the water we use come from? Cayuga Lake of course.

Like a lot of the water around the world our lake is slowly becoming polluted. The water is turning a darker color and is becoming more murky. You can sometimes even find assorted debris in the lake. When you think about it the pollution level in the lake affects us constantly. Since all of our water is from that lake then the water we are using is becoming polluted. It is simple to keep our lake clean but takes an effort from everyone.

Most of the water we use, for work or fun, comes from Cayuga Lake and that water should be protected. We can’t go a day without water and summer fun wouldn’t be quite the same with out it either. Water covers a big percent of the earth’s surface but the most important percent is right here at our lake.
