Cayuga Lake Watershed Network
Doc. #2007-
Outreach Committee Telecon
October 25, 2007, updated Nov. 15
Present: Julie Patterson, Roxy Johnston, Judy Pipher
1. Launch of the Cayuga Lake Appreciation Poster and Photography
Contest discussed.
The Board at their October 9 meeting discussed our rough concept,
and were enthusiastic. They want to see further detail at the November
Board Meeting . Sharon, who is on the Board of the North American
Lakes Management Society, NALMS referred us to their poster contest
(perhaps our winners can submit in their 2008 contest). See: http://nalms.org/LakesAppreciationMonth/PDF/NALMS_poster_contest_2008.pdf
Samples of their past winners are found at: http://nalms.org/LakesAppreciationMonth/Default.aspx
We agreed that we would not restrict artwork to exclude media such
as charcoal and oils, as NALMS did. However, we will adopt their
size so that winners of our contest could be submitted to the NALMS
contest. We also agreed to open up both art and photography to all
3 categories of submitters, middle school, high school, adult. In
the interest of getting out formal announcements quickly, so that
teachers can plan for the winter-spring semester, there are several
assignments, to be completed and e-mailed. Julie agreed to construct
a draft flyer. Judy provided the template from last year. The text
on the NALMS website, namely
“Poster themes should focus on any lake and watershed issues,
and may include such issues as pollution, aquatic invasive species,
aquatic life, aquatic plants, lake ecology and lake health”
suitably modified for our watershed and our contest, would serve
as a guide.
Judy will contact potential artistic critics to help us judge (we
all feel we can rule on content, but not artistic merit). Sharon
wants this contest fleshed out in the context of the full plan of
work for the Outreach Cte. Delay in contact of potential jurors
awaits that. We don't plan much work for the year with the exception
of contest and Lakefest, and budget should be unchanged.
Julie will contact local art teachers to try to understand their
requirements, including schedule. We agreed that roughly June 1,
2008 was a good date to aim for. Roxy will contact Sharon about
speaking with our Goulds Pumps sponsors. Rod Hawkes may be able
to help us with the photography aspects of the contest.
In response to the telecon, Judy placed on home page of www a placeholder
concerning “Cayuga Lake Appreciation Poster and Photography
Contest”, saying that this change is partially because this
is our 10th anniversary year, and we wanted to launch a new activity
to celebrate.
We all liked the idea of a calendar, and thought that there could
be 4 middle school, 4 high school, and 4 adult contributions. In
addition to receiving a cash prize, the winners would be among those
4 per category. Selection for the calendar is an additional prize.
Judy suggested that the jurors assign grades (between 1 and 10)
for each entry, excluding their own potential entry. Averages could
then be constructed to determine winners. Judy knows of an outfit
that has produced beautiful Spitzer Space Telescope calendars –
about $12/calendar – as long as number of orders known in
advance. Sharon provided Julie with sample of a calendar that the
North American Lake Management Society put
out: they had some good ideas, they have a sponsor for each page,
which would be
good to help raise some funds for the project. Since this would
be the 2009 calendar, there is plenty of time to flesh out the requirements.
We liked the idea of having the posters circulate throughout the
watershed as exhibits, and be on display at Lakefest 2008.
2. The Outreach Committee and the 10th year celebration
Julie reported that this activity is on hold pending funding resolution,
and assignation of new chair (prior chair had to resign).
3. Next call tentatively Nov. 27at 9:30am
