Doc. #2009-
CAYUGA LAKE WATERSHED NETWORK
Steward's Report
November-December 2009

Upcoming events that I hope can be attended by a Board/committee member.

1. Finger Lakes Museum, December 5: As you may know, Aurora and the Wells
College campus are on the short list of proposed locations for the Finger
Lakes Museum. The Network and the Floating Classroom have sent letters of
support. Tomorrow December 5th, the next meeting for this great project is
meeting in Branchport. The leaders of the Aurora/Wells effort are asking
that folks in support of our location attend and take an active role in next
steps. The meeting at 10 am at the Esperanza Mansion Hotel, 3456 Route 54 A,
Bluff Point (Branchport), NY. Be advised the Esperanza Mansion is about 20
minutes WEST of Penn Yan. While it is ONLY 55 miles away, it takes almost 90
minutes to get there from Aurora.

Here is what George Farenthold (Aurora and Wells leader) has to say about
the importance of this meeting: "This meeting, in my opinion will be
critically important BECAUSE so much of the work of the foreseeable future
will be accomplished by these new standing committees. These committees
which are now being organized and led by the Board of Directors include
Strategic Planning, Public Relations, Fund Raising, Partnerships, etc. We
need a seriously impressive turnout to demonstrate to these member/directors
that we really do intend to work in partnership with them to bring the
museum to fruition."

2. Finger Lakes Institute, December 5: 5th Annual Finger Lakes Research
Conferenc,e Hobart and William Smith Colleges Comstock Hall Dining Room and
Lounge, Geneva. While providing an opportunity to meet others interested in
environmental science and scholarship, this conference highlights Finger
Lakes scientific research particularly as it pertains to issues related to
the Finger Lakes of western and central New York State.

While the official registration was closed in late November, I am sure it is ok if you
show up and register at the door; contact Sarah Meyer at smeyer@hws.edu for
last-minute info.

3. Webinar on December 10: The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF)
has just released the 2010 Request for Proposals for its Five Star
Restoration Program. We need a board member to sign up, listen and view (via
your computer), and report back to us on whether this grant opportunity
might be of interest to help Keith Tidball continue his Canoga Creek and
Marsh restoration work. The Five Star partners will host a webinar for
potential applicants on December 10, 2009 from 2 to 3pm EST. The webinar
will provide information about NFWF's online application system, as well as
guidance on how to prepare competitive applications for the Five Star
Program. For a copy

Don't forget our display at the Ithaca Alternative Gift Fair tomorrow
December 5!

On Saturday, December 5, the 2009 Ithaca Alternative Gift Fair will be held
at the First Presbyterian and First Baptist Churches on Cayuga Street, from
11 am - 7 pm. Come and shop for meaningful gifts: make donations to your
favorite charities, in return for handsome gift cards to give to your
friends, stating that you have donated in their name. The event's Web site
is viewable here: http://www.ithacaaltgiftfair.org
<http://www.ithacaaltgiftfair.org/>

You can scroll down to our name and click on it to view our gift-donations.

I think that, after the event, there will be a chance to do this online (I
will let you know).

Perhaps I can bring some donation cards to our meeting Tuesday - unless that
is really intrusive.

Next Tuesday December 8, our Board meeting is at 6 pm, Deerhead Inn, Seneca
Falls.

If you discover that after all you can attend, please let me/Eric Riegel
know, just in case another chair can be added.(!)

Remember, we are each paying for our own meals; sorry about that!

Newsletter - at last!

And..I need your help to get out four issues in a timely fashion in 2010.

The new issue of the "Network News" should be in your mailboxes by next
week. It features photos and articles about "Sunset," how to comment on the
Marcellus Shale draft EIS; a report on the recent Phosphorus in the Lake
conference, updates on what's happening in 2010; and lots more. I have to
get out four issues in 2010 and will need active help from board and
committee members - finding good stories and upcoming events, and helping to
write them. If you are interested please contact me.

Program, Issues and Membership/Community Outreach Committees

..Are meeting during December/January to set our course for 2010.

Want to get involved? Contact Hilary, or John Mawdsley.

Upcoming events

Board meetings into 2010: January 12, February 9, March 9 - at our Wells
College office and other locations TBA, 7 - 9 pm.

Next year, 2-3/10 at Wells, 4/10 in Lansing: Bill Kappel's talk on "Lake
Levels."

Please share any lake-related talks, events that we might want to attend!

Please advise. Suggestion and Request from Niamh O'Leary

The Environmental Studies major at Wells College has two main tracks,
science and policy.

Each student major must do one to two semesters of work that results in a
Senior Thesis, and are often seeking project ideas.

Niamh O'Leary has asked me - and I am asking you to help - come up with a
Wish List of Network projects that qualified Wells College Environmental
Studies majors, in either science or policy, could take on as a thesis
topic.

Take care, and happy holidays.

Hilary
